Archbishop Ssemogerere calls for urgency to address drugs and substance abuse among the youth

Archbishop of Kampala His Grace Paul Ssemogerere

The Archbishop of Kampala His Grace Paul Ssemogerere has appealed to Ugandans to rededicate time for the children to avoid suicide tendencies, drugs and substance abuse.

In his Easter Message at Lubaga Cathedral Archbishop Ssemogerere said children are losing out on patience; feel neglected, misunderstood, lost hope and love either due to abandonment or laxity from their parents, guardians and leaders who are not guiding nor caring for them.

Many children have resorted to drugs from the slums of Kisenyi to the suburbs of high end areas like Ntinda, in schools and institutions of high learning, that have led many to run mad and developing suicidal tendencies. If this challenge is not checked the country is destined to having a lost generation.

He advised for the establishment of rehabilitation centers to counsel these youths instead of arresting them and calling them criminals. To the youth Archbishop Ssemogerere said they must lead their purpose with hope.

On the Bishops Pastoral letter that was released on 7th April 2025 by the Uganda Episcopal Conference Archbishop Ssemogerere said its coming to point out the vices, challenges and pains experienced in this country that must be anyalised with an open mind by all.

His grace Ssemogerere also called for respect of the elderly, the vulnerable and persons with disabilities as they have equal share for God’s creation.
